The Foundation for Education and Development

Mandate, goal and mission of the Foundation for Education and Development
The Foundation for Education and Development (FED) is the centre for Global Education in Switzerland.
Its educational mandate starts from the idea of a sustainable development and includes those interrelated subjects and questions that are vital for the future of mankind. Our goal is to promote education focusing on
-
teaching know-how and sensitivity for global connections of our life today
-
showing interconnections in order to enable the studentsto develop their awareness of global connections and know how, and how to apply them personally and responsibly
-
empowering people in developing an exchange in the form of a partnership beyond language, cultural and geographical boundaries
The foundation functions as a service provider in the field of education. The main target group are first of all educators and teachers of all school levels, but also the responsible officials for education of the Swiss Federal Government, the cantons and communities. Its services include:
- Information and advice
- formation and further training
- rent and sale of teaching material
- conceptual work and networking.
For the FED, providing a well qualified offer of educational material and concepts (including both, contents and methodology) is of major importance. To be able to do so, the FED developed a package of ways and means, such as publishing a catalogue on teaching material, elaborating and publishing those quality criteria enabling FED to classify material and concepts, and coordinating those forces producing teaching materials.
The head office of the FED is in Bern, whereas the regional offices offer their services to teachers in the respective regions: at Zurich and Berne to the German and Rhaeto-romanic speaking public; at Lausanne to the French speaking public and at Lugano to the Italian speaking public.
